It won't. It will be wasted, so working on unlocking the next step should be your top priority. That said, you shouldn't really worry about it, there's plenty of exp to be gained and since everything you do gives exp, you'll eventually get enough whenever you unlock it if you just keep playing. 5.
Mastery system is an account-wide progression system which unlocks account-wide benefits such as gliding and mounts. -from Guild Wars 2 wiki I feel like this part is done fairly well. It is a meaningful max level character progression and it increases player retention.
Yes, I've completed the story and, as far as I can tell, gotten every Mastery Insight that doesn't require a Jackal Portal to reach. Yeah, when you're roadblocked on masteries the excess XP defaults to the hidden spirit shard track. It doesn't show up on the bar, and is a bit of a waste as you'd likely prefer it go towards masteries, but it doesn't just get deleted.
So if you have alternate characters, or on your main, make HoT active and do enough of the 1st part to unlock Masteries, then flip back to the original personal story and finish it.. go to Living Story season 2 and do it, and then HoT.. watch your XP bar because when it fills up for the current mastery selected then the XP is "lost" unless you
Max all lvl 60 spells. Learn the element chart, use the best spell against the monster you are fighting. (Wind>stone>electric>water>fire>wind) At lvl 63, max earthquake, windfield and electric shock. Those are your main aoe skills. Electric shock is a proximity spell, the other two are targeted spells. At lvl 70, max all mastery skills.
